Learning objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be better able to:
- Identify the patients whose response to current PPIs needs improving
- Specify the factors contributing to incomplete response to current PPIs
- Select the most appropriate investigations for patients with refractory GERD
- Evaluate the new generation of longer-acting PPIs for the management of patients with GERD, including severe erosive esophagitis
- Describe the importance of controlling nocturnal acid secretion to improve sleep patterns and to avoid the potentially serious complications of prolonged night-time esophageal acid exposure
- Explain the epidemiology and presentation of GERD in older patients, and discuss the management of GERD in this age group.
